With the world evolving in every aspect, the construction industry is not exempted. The traditional brick and mortar type of construction has evolved and brought in new and cost-effective methods of construction such as the use of shipping containers as a means of accommodation.

Shipping containers have been used as a form of modular construction, however when Qatar on 30 November 2021 developed the first container stadium for the FIFA World Cup, this development left the world in awe. Named stadium 974 as the stadium was developed using 974 recyclable shipping containers in Doha, Qatar. Some of the containers housed stadium amenities and concessions.[1]

Stadium 974 in Qatar acted as a form of inspiration for a Property Development firm in Gweru, Zimbabwe. Through the inspiration of Stadium 974, Bentach Resources was inspired to develop a shopping mall using shipping containers.[2] The mall is set to be developed using an approximate of over 60 shipping containers which will act as the first shipping container mall in Zimbabwe. The tech-savy mall will house ablution facilities, showers as well will include hardware shops, restaurants and food courts.

Through the use of shipping containers in residential construction this has the potential of making strides in solving the housing backlog of Bulawayo which currently stands at over two hundred thousand. In Western Cape, South Africa, the use of container homes has been adopted as a measure in solving the housing phenomenon. [3]Greenpods develops container homes which range from 15m2– 400m2 which are mostly 2 bedrooms at a cost of R10,800.00 to R12,850.00, in US Dollars which equates to US $595.08- US $708.04. Low- income earners have the ability to be able to afford this kind of housing, as the main hurdle to owning a house has been the aspect of affordability.

Container homes come with pros such as that they are flexible and can be modified and customized to different kinds of designs. Container homes are durable and are resistant to many factors like rain, dust and sand. Container homes are eco-friendly as compared to the traditional brick and mortar.
